MSc Disaster Healthcare
This three-year part-time Masters programme is delivered via on-line learning supported by residential summer schools. The course is modular, each module is equivalent to 20 credits at level 7 (UK tariff).
Year 1 modules
- Personal Preparedness for Disasters (including legal & ethical challenges in disaster response)
- Principles & Concepts in Disasters (key theoretical concepts in disasters, national and international systems for disaster risk reduction & disaster response)
- Public Health in Disasters 1 (principles of public health, epidemiology, water & sanitation, nutrition)
Year 2 modules
- Public Health in Disasters 2 (child & maternal health, older persons wellbeing, mental health aspects of disasters, disease outbreak management)
- Planning for Civil Contingencies & Disasters (including leadership in extreme contexts and risk management)
- Evidence Based Practice in Disasters (research methods and research evaluation)
Year 3 modules
- Research Study OR Professional Practice Project (40 credit modules)
- Work-based Learning in Disasters
The teaching team is drawn from a wide range of specialists in disaster healthcare. The teaching team all have relevant international field experience through their work with non-government organisations, civil protection agencies or defence medical services. Research projects are directed by academics with an extensive history of research and publication in disasters.
Study is via web-based learning modules that make use of self-directed study, collaborative group work, case-study analysis and live web-turorials.
Assessment is through submission of essays and papers and through assessed on-line work.
Applicants. This programme attracts registered healthcare professionals (nurses, midwives, doctors, surgeons, physiotherapists etc.), plus professionals involved in health programme design and delivery. Relevant field experience is advantageous but not an entry requirement. A first degree is highly desirable but consideration is given to applicants with extensive relevant experience.
